Ecological Investigations: A Phenomenology of Habitats
These investigations identify and clarify some basic
assumptions and methodological principles involved in
ecological explanations of plant associations. How are
plants geographically distributed into characteristic groups?
What are the basic conditions that organize groups of
interspecific plant populations that are characteristic of
particular kinds of habitats? Answers to these questions
concerning the geographical distribution of plants in late
19th century European plant geography and early 20th
century American plant ecology can be distinguished
according to differing logical assumptions concerning the
habitats of plant associations
Sejm PRL I kadencji a przerywanie ciąży.
The article contains an analysis of a report of
1956’ parliamentary debate on introducing
the law regulating conditions of permissibilty
of pregnancy termination. The content of
the Act and discussion among it had became
an important contribution to the developement of birth control discourse, which after
the introduction of the law gained interest of
many authors, both communist and catholic.
The report could also be a perfect example of
rhetoric practises used in Polish Civic Republic
in the abortion discourse, as well as an overview of particular political options’ standpoints
on this issue
Debata publiczna bez kobiet?
w jaki sposób przekształca je on w celu dostosowania ich do analizy problemu dyskryminacji
kobiet. W drugiej części z kolei wykorzystałem omówioną wcześniej aparaturę pojęciową do
przeanalizowania wypowiedzi dwóch liberalnych intelektualistów związanych bardziej lub mniej
pośrednio z tematyką macierzyństwa i wychowania dzieci – Jacka Żakowskiego z wywiadu dla
„Super Expressu” i Zbigniewa Mikołejki w postaci jego felietonu „Wojna z wózkowymi”.The article shows, how the feminist standpoint
theory could be used for a research on
marginalisation of women’s voices and overlooking
their knowledge and experience in
Polish public discourse. In the first part of the
text I presented the theories, from which this
feminist research trend had taken its influence,
with emphasis on hegelian and marxian dialectics,
and in which way the feminist standpoint
theory develop these theories in order
to adapt them for the analysis of the problem
of discrimination of women. In the second
part I used the presented concepts to analyze
opinions of two liberal intellectuals, more or
less directly related to the subject of motherhood
and raising children – Jacek Żakowski
(from an interview with him made for „Super
Express”) and Zbigniew Mikołejko with his
column „Wojna z wózkowymi” (eng. „The war

Strategie nacisku. Prasa kobieca w latach 1956–1959 a dostęp do w pełni legalnej aborcji w PRL-u
In 1956, Polish authorities introduced an act on conditions of abortion permissibity, which was supposed to increase the availability of legal and safe abortions for women. However, due to numerous problems, the act could have not been implemented, pushing women to the abortion underground, until the end of 1959, when the minister of health published a disposition, which stated, that the only condition required for an abortion was an oral statement of a woman that she is not able to give birth to a child. The author conducted an analysis of texts, published in women’s magazines between the introduction of the act and the introduction of 1959’s disposition – “Kobieta i Życie” and “Przyjaciółka” –and a daily newspaper commited to the idea of planned parenthood – “Życie Warszawy”,that have covered the matter of necessity of changing the law into such, that would actually let women have abortions when they would need it. The analysis outlines the problems, which the authors have listed as the reasons of the law’s ineffectiveness, postulatesof changes in the legislation and the rhetorical means used to convince the authorities toreform the act.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”. Antibodies to Enteroviruses in Cerebrospinal Fluid of Patients with Acute Flaccid Myelitis.
Acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) has caused motor paralysis in >560 children in the United States since 2014. The temporal association of enterovirus (EV) outbreaks with increases in AFM cases and reports of fever, respiratory, or gastrointestinal illness prior to AFM in >90% of cases suggest a role for infectious agents. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from 14 AFM and 5 non-AFM patients with central nervous system (CNS) diseases in 2018 were investigated by viral-capture high-throughput sequencing (VirCapSeq-VERT system). These CSF and serum samples, as well as multiple controls, were tested for antibodies to human EVs using peptide microarrays. EV RNA was confirmed in CSF from only 1 adult AFM case and 1 non-AFM case. In contrast, antibodies to EV peptides were present in CSF of 11 of 14 AFM patients (79%), significantly higher than controls, including non-AFM patients (1/5 [20%]), children with Kawasaki disease (0/10), and adults with non-AFM CNS diseases (2/11 [18%]) (P = 0.023, 0.0001, and 0.0028, respectively). Six of 14 CSF samples (43%) and 8 of 11 sera (73%) from AFM patients were immunoreactive to an EV-D68-specific peptide, whereas the three control groups were not immunoreactive in either CSF (0/5, 0/10, and 0/11; P = 0.008, 0.0003, and 0.035, respectively) or sera (0/2, 0/8, and 0/5; P = 0.139, 0.002, and 0.009, respectively).IMPORTANCE The presence in cerebrospinal fluid of antibodies to EV peptides at higher levels than non-AFM controls supports the plausibility of a link between EV infection and AFM that warrants further investigation and has the potential to lead to strategies for diagnosis and prevention of disease
Lorentz violation at high energy: concepts, phenomena and astrophysical constraints
We consider here the possibility of quantum gravity induced violation of
Lorentz symmetry (LV). Even if suppressed by the inverse Planck mass such LV
can be tested by current experiments and astrophysical observations. We review
the effective field theory approach to describing LV, the issue of naturalness,
and many phenomena characteristic of LV. We discuss some of the current
observational bounds on LV, focusing mostly on those from high energy
astrophysics in the QED sector at order E/M_Planck. In this context we present
a number of new results which include the explicit computation of rates of the
most relevant LV processes, the derivation of a new photon decay constraint,
and modification of previous constraints taking proper account of the helicity
dependence of the LV parameters implied by effective field theory.Comment: v.1 56 pages, 3 figures, Invited article for Annals of Physics; v.2:

Threshold analyses and Lorentz violation
In the context of threshold investigations of Lorentz violation, we discuss
the fundamental principle of coordinate invariance, the role of an effective
dynamical framework, and the conditions of positivity and causality. Our
analysis excludes a variety of previously considered Lorentz-breaking
parameters and opens an avenue for viable dispersion-relation investigations of
Lorentz violation.Comment: 9 page
GDF15 mediates the effects of metformin on body weight and energy balance.
Metformin, the world's most prescribed anti-diabetic drug, is also effective in preventing type 2 diabetes in people at high risk1,2. More than 60% of this effect is attributable to the ability of metformin to lower body weight in a sustained manner3. The molecular mechanisms by which metformin lowers body weight are unknown. Here we show-in two independent randomized controlled clinical trials-that metformin increases circulating levels of the peptide hormone growth/differentiation factor 15 (GDF15), which has been shown to reduce food intake and lower body weight through a brain-stem-restricted receptor. In wild-type mice, oral metformin increased circulating GDF15, with GDF15 expression increasing predominantly in the distal intestine and the kidney. Metformin prevented weight gain in response to a high-fat diet in wild-type mice but not in mice lacking GDF15 or its receptor GDNF family receptor α-like (GFRAL). In obese mice on a high-fat diet, the effects of metformin to reduce body weight were reversed by a GFRAL-antagonist antibody. Metformin had effects on both energy intake and energy expenditure that were dependent on GDF15, but retained its ability to lower circulating glucose levels in the absence of GDF15 activity. In summary, metformin elevates circulating levels of GDF15, which is necessary to obtain its beneficial effects on energy balance and body weight, major contributors to its action as a chemopreventive agent
